" Here's the score: by building up its own matchmaking service riding shotgun with Steam, "you can get in and play with players your same rank," Bowling said. However, "You're completely reliant on IWNet and there is no dedicated server or server list. You rely on IW Net for matchmaking and your games, but you still have your private matches."
The level of control over those matches allows players to set a wide array of parameters and rules for the game. But community features such as clans, and the high level of customization available in hosting a modded game or custom map on one's own dedicated server, face an uncertain future, if not their end outright.
"Custom content, after the fact, keeps the game alive for us a lot longer," one of Bowling's questioners said.
"This is the first time we've ever done something like this, obviously," Bowling said, "and I know the team has huge plans for what IWNet develops into, and this is just the beginning. It's hard for me to speak personally towward IWNet, because that is a code heavy project."
Bowling reminded that this method of multiplayer delivery also allows Infinity Ward "a lot more control and structure for the PC version. From a development standpoint, it's very good on how we can access and update the PC community."
But before this is taken as the definitive end of modding and custom maps, Bowling clearly said "I don't have those answers yet," when asked further about how IWNet would affect that aspect of PC Modern Warfare play.
The entire conversation is archived here, and Bowling comes in at the 1:39:00 mark (that's one hour, 39 minutes). If this matters to you I definitely encourage listening to all of what he has to say before reacting.
But the news is not being taken well. The BASHandSlash guys referred to the vehemence in the chatlog running concurrent with the program, and terms such as "Black Saturday" and "a day of infamy" are being thrown around. "They've made Jesus cry," is another reaction, particularly from the competitive PC community whose future also is affected. "The server community is what's made us. It's what defined us," says Josh Pickler of planetmedalofhonor.com "IW.NET is getting the PC community to turn into consoles. You're trying to re-write our history."
Bowling was steadfast in telling BASHandSlash that, for the whole of the community, IWNet will be a benefit.
"It's definitely going to be a change. It's going to be a very different setup than what we're previously used to in the Call of Duty franchise for the PC," In the long term it's going to help the community. It changes the way and how we're able to update and support the PC version."
It definitely bears watching, and keep in mind the story could change as Infinity Ward releases more information on IWNet. "

omg. lets go see what the server hosting companies say..
and here we go..
I'm glad i never bought and pre-ordered this. NO SERVERS FOR C3LL now.
having to pay for DLC.. new maps mean more cash forked out. no more modders, no custom maps, no custom rules, no realism. My own thoughts are that IW are bowing to console gamers. Does this mean that PC + Console gamers can play togther on iw.net servers?
Well we got a few quid in the bank for dedicated servers for the next game. Got to say this though, while im looking forward to single player MW2, i dont think im gonna fork out 35 quid for a game that will prove pointless for online gaming with my friends.
Fourzerotwo was on our BASH webcast this morning and he had a few surprises for the PC community.
Here are the snippets:
We're doing a lot on the backend to make the game accessible for everyone. There is no delay for the PC version of MW2 There's prestige mode Jason West at the MP event, said that he was dead on, on the matchmaking servers. We've been building a system on the backend called IW.NET. You are completely reliant on IW.NET. There are no server lists. There are no dedicated servers. You have private matches where you can customize the game You cannot put MW2 on a dedicated server. This is the first time we've ever done something like this and the team has huge plans for what IW.NET develops into. Customizing your game...you have quite a few options in a private match You're getting same game (as in Console), plus matchmaking and private match. Server admin point-of view, NO DEDICATED SERVERS I've summarized some of my own thoughts from the cast here:
General
IW partnering through Steam is what you will see in the future. Matchmaking is not through Steam, but IW.NET is run in conjunction with Steam. GSP's will no longer be renting out servers. No PunkBuster. VAC will be used as an anti cheat. Retail distribution: Pre-orders will get a disk. Or you could order from Steam. DLC may now need to be paid for - not confirmed. Piracy was only a small reason for going to IW.NET - not the whole reason. Clans:
No more clan servers. Private matches, replace clan servers. Listen servers will connect to each other. IW.NET/Steam will replace the community server admin Competitive Gaming
Competitive gaming has changed forever. It might be possible in the future for IW engineers to load a "competitive" setting on IW.NET, but it is far from a guarantee. It might also never happen. Modding
Modding the game is now very much in question. Fourzerotwo had no info on modding. However, it appears that there will be no mods or maps for MW2. Modding in SpecOps? Unknown.
Today our game has changed for ever.
I'll leave this post with Josh Peckler's comments from planetmedalofhonor.com:
The server community is what's made us. It's what defined us.
IW.NET is getting the PC community to turn into consoles. You're trying to re-write our history.
no0t gonna buy it then. Whats a point of multiplayer game with no own server? Only good thing is VAC,but this isn´t help to overlook the other problems.
Maybe in the future they will repatch it like it should be. A no go for me.
At least we could buy then our own L4D2 server then [ image disabled ] [ image disabled ] "I Have a Rendezvous with Death. And I to my pledged word am true,I shall not fail that rendezvous." - Alan Seeger

Dont get me wrong guys but in still gong to buy it probably. I still like cod4 gameplay an i bet mw2 will feature even better gameplay. No dedicated servers is just REALY stupid but i doubt that the game will become unplayable online. If they use the same system as on w@w on PS3. You van still play with all your buddy's no plroblem. You even get put in the Same team no matter what. Not many servers lag there and you van specify wether you want to play Hc or standard and which gt ofc.
To make myself clear:
Will i buy it? Yes
do i see myself playing it for a long time of they mimic console gaming without pc like inprovements? No
Do i want Bf Bc2? HECK YEAH!

Unless I see improvemnts from this, I dont think I'll bother getting it. I brought WAW and hardly played the MP, cause after a few motnhs of the clan playing it, they got bored, and i only played it for Zombies. So think I'll just settle for L4D2....

Yeah, I understand your point of view what for me matter e.g.
-You can´t choose your fav server -Default Map rotation or surpirse map -You don´t have the control over noobs (connected to the first, good server kicked annoying players) -You are relied to the system of IW,if thats crashes, everything crashes - 32 players on no dedicated server with only 1.6 mb connection = more or less bad ping
Still, woulöd be nice to see some opinions about the game, I hope you would be so nice to do a reivew then

Ofc ill do a review for you Dan
And yes all your points are verry valid. And thats why i dont see it having a verry long lasting mult either. But we are talking about IW here tough. A company almost as good at making fpses as DICE. I doubt that they would totally screw PC users. Maybe this was just a VEEERRRYYYY bold statement from 1 person at IW.
BTW i think the limit will be 16 or 18 players like on console.... [ image disabled ]
so we can expect smaller maps then, jesus, i thought modern warfare was all about opening up maps and having large scale battles.. hell BF2 managed it nearly 4 years ago!
That is bullshit, how can they say that jerks. I mean it was PC gamers that brought online gaming to the future just using a mini LAN and WAN's hell i remember playing total annihilation with my mate in the same house on two separate PC's using serial cable for connection.
I will still get the game which makes me feel like a traitor, if there is truth behind such a bold statement all PC gamers should boycott the entire game, they think console gamers are the market are they F*CK!!! No offence to our younger players but snot nosed Teens are the majority of console gamers cause they are cheap to afford and there simple minds can work the controls. The reason they are such a big market is cause they don't have a life yet, where females and life get in the way.
PC gamers i feel are of the older generations and the ones who grew up with PC's and consoles not offering the best mulitplayer.
I mean is this the start of something bad, what ever next for Bad Company 2!!! I mean where will the line be drawn bringing console and PC game together i feel won't work, a mouse and keyboard dicks a gamepad and anything other than some 3rd person games (Tomb Raider etc) and driving games. So you will be able aim and kill alot faster and consoles also cheat with a auto lock system, where if you are in scaled inches in the game looking at someone the bullets would hit them.
